Located on the heights of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, in the immediate vicinity of the Chantaco golf course, the Hôtel Chantaco is set in a remarkable landscape, overlooking the golf course and La Rhune mountain. Built in 1928 by René Thion de la Chaume, the hotel is intimately linked to the history of Chantaco and is today an emblematic building of Saint-Jean-de-Luz's architectural heritage.
The project supports the transformation of this historic building by reconciling the preservation of its architectural identity with adaptation to contemporary uses. The interventions are designed to maintain continuity with the existing structure: proportions, moldings, lime plaster colors, terracotta tile roofs, ironwork, and natural stone combine to create an architectural vocabulary deliberately faithful to the building's original character.
The main building is extended by an addition that naturally fits around the existing patio. It houses new rooms and a fitness area, while the patio and common areas are restructured to improve the continuity between indoors and outdoors, acoustic comfort and accessibility of the hotel.
The annex has also been renovated and extended to accommodate ten new bedrooms, all opening onto private, landscaped outdoor spaces. Around the swimming pool, the project develops a true relaxation and wellness area combining a pool bar, natural stone terraces, a spa, and rest areas.
At the estate level, the project aims to evolve Chantaco without erasing its history, strengthening the dialogue between architecture, landscape, and uses. The new interventions extend the existing building design while providing the comfort and amenities necessary for a new generation of hotel establishment.
